How to shop for bar stools
Be sure to print out the following checklist and bring it with you as you browse our selection of bar stools:
Bar stools come in several standard heights:
- Counter height
- Bar height
- Chair height
- Vanity height
- Spectator height
- Hydraulic (adjustable from 24 ½ to 32 ½” – hair salon chair)
Wood vs. upholstery
If you purchase a stool with a wood seat, the height will likely be a teensy bit lower than a stool with an upholstered seat.
Measure the area in which the bar stools will be located, so you're aware of the maximum width and depth of space you must allow for each stool. Don't forget to allow for space between stools.
Consider whether you'd like your stools to have arms. If your stools will be stationed under a kitchen eating bar, measure its height from the floor to ensure that the bar stools' arms will fit beneath the countertop.
- Do you prefer backless stools, or stools with backs?
- Swivel or stationary stools?
Materials and Style
- Wood, iron, or brushed steel?
- Traditional, contemporary, Colonial, Pub, Country, or Designer style?
- Will you be using your bar stools inside or outside? Do they need to do double-duty, perhaps? If you're using your stools outside or seasonally, consider where you're going to store them during the off-season.
What colors will best complement the color scheme of the room in which you'll use your bar stools?
