Chairs
The right chair or bench can say, "come sit
down and relax!" or "I'm just for show,
don't even think about sitting here."
Carefully placed chairs can help direct
traffic through your outdoor rooms. You can
even control the amount of time that guests
sit by keeping comfort, or lack thereof, in
mind. A soft lounging chair says “Stay as
long as you want and relax” and a barstool or hard chair says, “Perch a few moments and
talk”. A chair by itself indicates, “Move
around and be social or sit and be alone.”

Tables
Round edges sooth the eye and encourages
people to talk. Square tables seat more
people and allow people to keep a personal
bubble of space around them. (Now you know
why people are more hesitant to join a
stranger at a round table than a square
one.) Surfaces talk to people too. Glass
says "elegance." Wood says "casual." Plastic
says, "I'm kid-friendly!"
What is on your table talks as well. Crowded
table? Uninviting. When entertaining you
might consider putting your food on one
table and seating at another.

Accessories
Flowers on a table can be wonderful, but be
careful your centerpiece isn't too tall. It
can keep people from talking and opening up.
(On the other hand, that might be the reason
to use that type of centerpiece!) An outdoor
mat can add a nice flavor to your space, or
seem like it's in the way.
Just remember, every piece in your backyard
is saying something. Now, go talk it up!
